About NLMFC Print

The North Leeds Model Flying Club

Site seen from the air

The North Leeds Model Flying Club is a BMFA affiliated club with a history going back more than thirty years, and today boasts a growing membership of about 40. We have a superb flying site in a relatively secluded location near Almscliff Crag between Leeds and Harrogate. The site has three runways catering for all wind directions, and we have a hard-standing car park and a club hut.

The club caters for fixed-wing aircraft of all types, with electric and 4-stroke IC power, both glow and petrol. Glider tugs are used from time to time for silent flight. Flying is allowed every day in daylight hours, with Wednesday morning and Sundays being the most popular. Out of consideration for the local amenity, however, we do not allow 2-stroke engines at any time.

The club actively encourages members to continuously improve their skills as their flying progresses. We have a strong commitment to safety, and new members who have no formal BMFA qualifications are expected to demonstrate a minimum level of safety awareness and flying competence by undertaking a “Green Peg” Award before they are allowed to fly solo. We are also intending to arrange for regular BMFA examinations through the BMFA Northern Area Committee for those who wish to take A, B, or C certification. We also hope to qualify at least one member as an examiner by the end of 2008.

We also have an active flight training program with experienced members mentoring less experienced pilots up to at least Green Peg level, and beyond if the trainee wants it. We have trainers who use both mode 1 and mode 2, and we can “buddy” up to most types of transmitter if required. We are able to give advice to new modellers on trainers and radio systems. We also have a wealth of experience in electric flight – it would be fair to say that the majority of flying at NLMFC these days is electric.

We currently have a limited number of places for new members, and details can be found in the Membership Information section, or by contacting anyone on the committee. Please feel free to visit the site, the best time is probably from mid-morning on Sunday most flyable weekends of the year, or Wednesday mornings in the warmer months.
